A reason to begin

What brings you
to Chinese?

Give your course search a useful starting point: the situations where you want to understand more, express yourself and take part.

Everyday communication

Order a meal, ask a follow-up question or get to know someone beyond an introduction. Shape your goals around the conversations you want to have.

Discuss my everyday learning goals

Academic preparation

Build a language plan around the degree you hope to pursue. Consider the language evidence your intended university requests and the time you have to prepare for it.

Professional interests

Explain your field of work and the situations where Chinese could be useful. Explore whether a general programme or separately scoped targeted practice fits those communication goals.

Build your learning plan

Your starting point.
Your own pace.

A good course choice brings your current level, available time and daily routine together. BETU can help you organise those priorities before you choose.

  1. Describe your current level

Tell us what you have studied and what you can comfortably do in Chinese. Include speaking, listening, reading and writing, plus any recent course or test results.

  2. Choose a realistic study window

Share your earliest start date and the time you can spend in China. Compare the course's actual teaching dates with your travel and other commitments.

  3. Match the intensity to your routine

Review scheduled lessons, independent study and the practice you can sustain between classes. Ask how the timetable supports the skills you most want to develop.

  4. Consider where you will live and learn

Think about accommodation, the journey to class and your day-to-day budget. Include city preferences early so course and living arrangements can be considered together.

Bring the language into your day

Learn it.
Try it.
Use it again.

A purposeful routine connects focused study with small opportunities to use what you have learned.

Make room for focused practice.

Revisit a short listening task, rehearse a useful phrase or record yourself speaking. Bring the parts you find difficult back to your teacher so your practice has a clear focus.

Let ordinary moments become practice.

Use familiar situations to try a question, listen to the reply and build a short exchange. Small, respectful conversations can give classroom vocabulary a place in daily life.

Choose with a clear picture

Look at the course
behind the timetable.

A useful comparison goes beyond the city and tuition fee. Look at what you will practise, how your progress is reviewed and how the timetable fits your life.

Starting level and placement

Check which entry levels the course accepts and how learners are placed. Ask what information or assessment is used, when placement happens and what to do if the assigned level does not feel right.

Share your learning history with BETU so we can help you compare suitable starting points.

Class format and teaching focus

Look at how the course balances speaking, listening, reading and writing. Review the class format, available learning support and whether its activities match your main goal.

Teaching dates and weekly commitments

Confirm start and end dates, scheduled lessons, holidays and attendance expectations. Include independent study and any additional activities when planning your week.

Assessment and progress

Ask how progress is reviewed, what attendance or assessment requirements apply and what completion evidence the course provides. A completion document and an HSK result serve different purposes.

Campus, accommodation and daily routine

Consider where classes take place, the accommodation arrangements available to you and how the location fits transport, food, daily living and your overall budget.

Keep your next goal in view

Give your progress
a direction.

Continue building confidence

Review what has become easier and what still needs practice. Decide whether another course, a different intensity or separately scoped tutoring would support your next goal.

Discuss my next learning stage

Prepare for an HSK goal

Identify why you need the test result and confirm the required level, accepted test and submission timing with the institution requesting it. Plan preparation around that purpose and your current skills.

Work backwards from your intended degree's language requirements and application dates. Language study and degree admission are separate steps, with each university making its own admission decision.

Can I study Chinese in China as a complete beginner?

Beginner options are available in the market. Check that a course explicitly accepts beginners and understand how its placement process works before you choose.

Tell BETU you are starting from the beginning so we can focus the course discussion appropriately.

How long should I study in China?

Start with a practical goal and the time you can commit. Your starting level, lesson intensity, attendance and regular practice all shape progress. Compare actual course dates before choosing a study period.

Can I focus on speaking rather than exam preparation?

Use your main goal to assess the course's teaching balance. Ask how much guided conversation is included and how speaking feedback is provided alongside the other language skills.

How does placement work?

Placement arrangements differ by institution. A provider may use your learning history, a test, an interview or another assessment. Confirm the process and timing for the specific course you are considering.

Can language study help me prepare for a degree?

Language study can be part of your preparation, but a later degree application has its own academic and language requirements. Confirm the evidence and deadlines required by the intended university and programme.

What should I include in my budget?

Compare tuition, required learning materials, accommodation, daily living costs, travel and any selected BETU support. Ask which charges are paid to the course provider and which are included in your service quote.

Can BETU help with arrival and settling in?

Your agreed package can include airport pickup, check-in assistance and university onboarding support. SIM and bank guidance is provided online. Any additional or ongoing support is separately scoped.
